H. P. "Pete" Austin, 88, of Ava, died Tuesday in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro after an illness of two months.

He was born Oct. 19, 1876, in Kinkaid Township of Jackson County, the son of Oliver and Rebecca Bowers Austin. He was married to Mary Tope, who died July 4,1963.

Mr. Austin was a retired welder.

He leaves a grandson, Robert N. Gandy of Du Quoin, the incumbent Perry County state's attorney; a nephew, Earl Austin of Ava; and step-daughters, Mrs. Mary Angerer, Mrs. Ella Stoops and Miss Irene Moore, all of University City, Mo., Miss Anna Moore, of Bakersfield, Calif., Mrs. Josephine Hill of Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs. Sallie Olson of Olivette, Mo. One daughter preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Wilson Funeral Home in Ava, with Rev. William Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Wright Cemetery south of Ava.
