SFC Windham, Service Battery, 555th Field Artillery Battery, 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team, was initially listed as Missing in Action while fighting N. Korean forces near Pongnam-ni, South Korea on August 12, 1950. The 555th had been rushed to South Korea from Hawaii to assist in stopping the advance of the North Korea People's Army in S. Korea. N. Korean forces had infiltrated around the main lines of defence and attacked the 555th and 90th Field Artillery Battalions. During the melee, the 555th lost six guns. In total the 555th & 90th lost over 300 men (Killed in Action, Wounded or Missing in Action). It was later learned that the N. Korean murdered 20 of the captured artilerymen. On December 31, 1953, Windham's status was changed to presumed Killed in Action Remains Not Recovered. Windham's name was inscribed on the Courts of the Missing.
