Daughter of Phillip Smith and Mary Slade, early settlers of Rhode Island. Her family "possessed in a very high degree the principals of civil and religious liberty." She married Edward Gray II in 1690, as his first wife, and lived in a merchant's home on the main road from Newport to Boston. In 1710, at age 37 Mary died, leaving behind her widower and eight children aged 3-19. She was buried in the 60 acre lot beside her home.
