The Rev. Homer G. Lindsay Jr., pastor of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville -- thought to be the largest single congregation in Florida -- had died of complications from cancer.

The religious leader, 72, died late on Sunday at St. Luke's Hospital. He was diagnosed with lymphoma on Feb. 4, just one day after the funeral of his only son.

The Rev. Lindsay, pastor of First Baptist for 31 years, was admitted to St. Luke's on Sunday and died about 10 p.m., a hospital official said.

First Baptist, in downtown Jacksonville, has almost 26,000 members and is the Florida Baptist Convention's largest single congregation, the convention says. It is also thought to be the largest in Florida.

The Rev. Lindsay's son, Homer, 38, died of a heart attack on Jan. 28. He was buried on Feb. 3.

Just before Christmas, the Rev. Lindsay surprised his congregation with his decision to step down after 31 years at First Baptist. His retirement was set for the end of March.
