A.F. was the 12th of 21 children born to David McWilliams. He was the 3rd of 12 children born to David's second wife Martha Collins. In the 1870s the family moved to a farm near Lometa in Lampasas County, and it was in Lampasas County that he met and married Nancy Frances McWilliams on August 8, 1883.

A.F. and Nancy moved and sharecropped quite a bit, and A.F. preached in Baptist churches. They moved to Callahan County, Texas around 1900. From there they moved to Taylor and Coke Counties as well as Oklahoma for brief periods, but they returned to Callahan County and lived in or very near Callahan County the remainder of their lives.

A.F., known as "Grandpa Mac" to grandchildren and others, died in Baird, Texas while living with son Mindon's family.
