George D. Keith, 94, Topeka, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Keith was a music teacher. He taught in Summersville, Mo., and in Pawnee Rock and Atwood. He also taught music and served as principal of LaCrosse High School for 21 years before moving to Topeka to become the state director of school unification. He retired in 1973. He also was a composer whose compositions have been performed around the world.

He was born April 7, 1908, in Trenton, Mo., the son of James William and Barbara Ellen DeVolld Keith. He attended Central College in Fayette, Mo., and earned a bachelor's degree in music from Fort Hays State University in Hays and a master's degree in music in 1942 from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati.

He married Bernice M. DeWoody on March 22, 1930, at Springfield, Mo. She died Nov. 27, 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia F. Wesley, Tillamook, Ore.; two grandsons; and one stepgreat-grandson.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Keith will lie in state from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Midland Hospice Inc., 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, 66606; or the American Heart Association, 5375 S.W. 7th, Topeka, 66606.
