Myrtle Howes was the daughter of Civil War veteran, Edwin Howes. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas as her father traveled the south selling insurance after the war. Her family moved to Eola, Illinois to farm in the late 1880's and then later to Yorkville, Illinois around 1910 when Edwin retired. By 1911, she was attending Northern Illinois Teachers College in DeKalb.

In 1911, she met Harry Rutherford Hatch through his sisters who were also attending the teacher's college in DeKalb. They were married May 12 of that year and moved to the Hatch family farm on Warrenville Road in Lisle. She also taught school at a one room school located at that time at the intersection of Warrenville Rd and Ogden Avenue.

She remained on the farm after starting a family in 1914 until they tried retirement in 1950 on the northern coast of California near Arcada. After a couple of years, they moved back to Illinois and resided at 4823 Stanley Avenue in Downers Grove until Harry's death in 1963. In 1966, she moved in with daughter Clara Fern Read until Fern's death in 1970. In 1971 she resided with her daughter June Frey until passing on June 27, 1972 at the age of 88.
