James and Iola Stewart were married in Karnes City, TX by Rev. C. Williamson on October 17, 1904.
His death certificate indicated that he had lived in area of Taft for 32 years. His wife, Iola Samuel Stewart, had died in 1946.
James died from Carcinoma of the Pancreas at 7:40 a.m. on April 3, 1952. He had lived 69 years. Mrs. C.D. Manuel, of Taft, was the informant on his death certificate. He was buried on April 5.

"James C. Custer TAFT - James Calvin Custer, 69, retired farmer and a resident of San Patricio County for the past 32 years, died at 7:30 a.m. today at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. D. Manuel, here after a long illness.
Custer was born in Bee County and resided there during the early years of his life. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Taft. Surviving, besides his daughter, are a sister, Mrs. R. J. Croft, Crystal City, Texas; two brothers, J. M. Custer, Bruni, Texas, and J. H. Custer, Beeville; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The body may be viewed by friends at the Cage Funeral Home in Taft. Funeral arrangements will be announced later."
