Bear Grass -- Selma Whitaker Hodges, 86, of the 9000 block of Bear Grass Road, died Oct. 24, 2001, at Martin General Hospital.
Born in Martin County on June 13, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Whitaker and the late Lela Brown Whitaker. On May 11, 1931, she married Percy Taylor Hodges Sr. who predeceased her Sept. 15, 1953. A homemaker, she lived in Norfolk for 55 years and moved back to North Carolina in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter Alice H. Morris of Bear Grass; sons, Percy T. Hodges Jr. and Lester P. Hodges, both of Norfolk, Jimmy G. Hodges of Raleigh and Eddie H. Hodges of Chesapeake; a sister, Viola Bullock of Bear Grass; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Biggs Funeral Home, Williamston, by the Rev. Jimmy Cole Williams. Burial will be in Martin Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
