James was a Scout in the Black Hawk War.

The Life of Capt John Wall:
James Wall born 26 Dec 1766, second child of John and Agnes Wall, was a scout during the Black Hawk War. He had five families of slaves, who he took to Bellefontaine, Logan County, Ohio. Here he freed them and gave each a piece of land. He married Elinor Boone, a *second cousin*, born 13 May 1772. Their 15 children were born in Harrison Co, (KY).

The sons of this family belonged to the "Regulars" a sort of local police band organized for protection against the Indians who were incited to great cruelties by renagades from justice, as one Simon Girty, who was called the "moat in the white man's milk" who participated in crimes of a terrible character to secure white scalps for which, we are told, they go from one to four pounds each from the British soldiers. This man Girty escaped the vengeance of the Regulars until they found him a very old man. One of them dragged his head across a log, but his snow white hair and beard touched their hearts. The two Wall brothers were in the group. Dr Knight and Col Crawford were two of the victims of this cruel warfare. (see Simon Girty #17363998)
