Mrs. Maness died Feb. 13 in Maydelle after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born March 11, 1924, in Lilbert.
She graduated from Rusk High School and Tyler Commercial College. She played on the state champion basketball team for Rusk High School in 1941. During World War II, Mrs. Maness worked on the Army base in Greensboro, N. C. where she taught soldiers how to knit.
Mrs. Maness retired from Jacksonville Savings Bank after 30 years of employment. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi master chapter making her induction to the sorority in October 1978. She served on about every committee in the sorority and served the longest as secretary until 1993. During her years in sorority she was extension officer, president, secretary, girl of the year and Valentine sweetheart. She was awarded the Order of the Rose during August 1996 after 15 years of service to the sorority. In April 1999, she received her masters degree with Beta Sigma Phi, which is the highest rank in the sorority. She resigned from the sorority on April 2, 2002 because of her illness.
She was a life-long member of the Rusk First United Methodist Church, a member of the order of the Eastern Star and the Cherokee County Shrine Club. She was a volunteer for the Good Samaritan, Meals on Wheels, the literacy program at Rusk Primary School and Rusk State Hospital.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Adron and Nellie Wade; a sister, Inis Parmley; two brothers, Charles and James Wade; her husband, Lucious (Luke) Maness and a son, Terry Maness.
Survivors are her daughter, Tesa Maness and husband, Ford Freeman of Conroe; two granddaughters, Cheri Maness-Lovinger of Signal Hill, Calif. and Holly Baack of Splendora; and her caregivers, Tina and John Pierce, Jessica Akard and Nicole Akard Work.
