Ruben Cantell married Rowena A. Depriest on 1 February 1854 in Berry County, Missouri. The couple moved to Texas by 1859 settling first in Fannin County according to deed records. They were in Young County at the outbreak of the War and were living near Camp Belknap.

Ruben enlisted with the Frontier Regiment on 11 March 1862 at Camp Belknap. He served two months. See Post Returns.

Ruben and his wife moved from Young County due to depredations moving farther west. They were at McDonald County, Missouri by 1870. in 1880 the couple and their seven children were living in Parker County, Texas. In 1900, the family was living in the Chickasaw Nation in the Indian Territory with one son, Alvin, and two grandchildren: Reuben and Fannie Plumlee. IN 1910, Rowena was living with her son near Markley in Young County. The census records she was the mother of 13 children of which eight are still living.

Mrs. Cantwell, the mother of A.J. Cantwell and Willis Cantwell was buried at Markley last Saturday. Mrs. Cantwell, 77, leaves a large family of sons and daughters to mourn her death. Mrs. Cantwell was at one time a citizen of Markley and we knew her as a good Christian woman.
