Ruben Cantell married Rowena A. Depriest on 1 February 1854 in Berry County, Missouri. The couple moved to Texas by 1859 settling first in Fannin County according to deed records. In 1860, the Ruben Cantwell's came to Young County from Newton County, Missouri, settling near Camp Belknap. Ruben enlisted with the Frontier Regiment on 11 March 1862 at Camp Belknap. He served two months. See Post Returns. Ruben and his wife moved from Young County due to depredations moving farther west. They were in McDonald County, Missouri by 1870. in 1880 the couple and their seven children were living in Parker County, Texas. In 1900, the family was living in the Chickasaw Nation in the Indian Territory with one son, Alvin Cantwell, and two grandchildren: Reuben and Fannie Plumlee. In 1910, Rowena was living with her son near Markley in Young County. The census records she was the mother of 13 children of which eight are still living. Ruben and Rowena Cantwell returned to Young County with the youngest of their 13 children: Alvin Jasper Cantwell. A.J. Cantwell was 20 years old at the time.

On Ruben Cantwell's military pension application, he did not have a middle name. He makes his mark "X" and the name, Ruben Cantwell is added to the information.
