"This village was stunned by the news last Saturday afternoon that the Joseph Byrnes home in Shetek Township had been destroyed by fire and four children had been badly burned in the flames. Ella Farrell of Chicago, who was visiting at the Byrne's home, was caught in the burning, and her remains were not recovered until early Sunday morning. The three Byrnes children escaped from the flames but all were severely burned. Helen, six years of age passed away that evening about 11:30 and her elder sister, Mary, Tuesday morning. Joseph, 9 years old, was severely burned about the feet and lower limbs but strong hopes are held that he will recover. The parents were helping neighbors thresh and the children were playing in the parlor when they heard something in the kitchen and when they opened the door, they were enveloped with flames and the partially suffocated and it was a miracle that any of them escaped from the building. Funeral services for Ella Farrell and Helen were held Monday morning at the Catholic Church and services for Mary were held on Wednesday morning."
