Mary died from a staph infection following a puncture to the lip by a quilting needle. Her obit appeared in the April 27 1915 Post-Dispatch and reads as follows:

On Tuesday, April 27, 1915 after a short illness, Mary Handel, beloved daughter of Ruppert and Sophia Handel (nee Liebmann) and dear sister of Lizzie, Josephine, Tillie, and Henry Handel, and our sister-in-law, aged 19 years. Funeral on Thursday, April 29 at 2 p.m. from the residence, 1400 South Seventh Street, to St. Vincent de Paul Church, thence to Calvary Cemetery.
