MRS. BROWN KILLED WHEN HIT BY TRAIN
Old Fort--Mrs. Esther Brown, 80, of Old Fort, was killed instantly when struck by diesel passener engine No. 16 on the tracks near the Old Fort depot Saturday about 5:30 p.m.
Investigating officers reported Mrs. Brown was walking along side the tracks, apparently became frightened when the engineer blew the whistle and jumped in front of the train.
The woman's body was dragged down the tracks about 400 yards, officers reported. The train was proceeding east towards Salisbury at the time of the accident.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Henry Groomes, of Statesville; and four sons, Loren, George, Charlie and Arthur, all of Old Fort.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon in the Old Fort Church of God with Rev. Charles Rogers officiating. Burial was in Cherry Springs cemetery.
