HAVENS
Mr. Hubert D. "Slim" Havens Sr., 79, of Vancleave, Miss., died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at his home in the Red Hill community. Mr. Havens was born Oct. 10, 1926, in Vancleave.

He was a U.S. Army veteran during World War II and received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. During his service in the Phillipines, he was a champion prize fighter. Mr. Havens was a lifelong member of the Red Hill United Methodist Church. He was a former truck driver for Jackson County Beat 5.

He was sometimes known best by his nickname, the "can man." Mr. Havens was one of the last small truck farmers. He loved to garden and sold sweet potatoes, collards and most recently, blueberries.

He was an outdoorsman and lived on the river in a houseboat for 12 years. Mr. Havens never met a stranger and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He deeply loved his family and especially cherished his grandchildren.

Mr. Havens was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eunice Havens; brother, Berton Havens; daughter, Kathy Havens; grandson, Damien Jenkins and brother-in-law, Gerald Glen Herrington Sr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Jewel Faye Havens of Vancleave; sons, John Hubert Havens of Vancleave, Miss., Hubert D. (Mona) Havens Jr. of Dothan, Ala., Lewis M. (Amy) Havens of Vancleave, William (Betty) Pitts of Vancleave; daughters, Victoria Galloway of Sullivan, Mo., Mary Virginia McLaurin of Hattiesburg, Miss., Julie Pemberton of Beaumont, Miss., Jeannie (Bill) Stacy of Jane, Mo.; sisters, Mary Ellen (Jasper) Pryor of Vancleave, Edwina (Steve) Stephenson of Vancleave; 24 grandchildren, multiple great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and last but not least, his beloved pet "Puddin."

Visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, from 6-10 p.m. at Red Hill United Methodist Church in Vancleave. Funeral Services will be Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at 10 a.m. from the Red Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. J.A. Sharp and Rev. John Maki officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery with Military graveside rites. Arrangements provided by Holder-Wells Funeral Home, Moss Point.
