John Bass Dalton was the second son of William Dalton and Elizabeth Sturman. I have found his place of birth listed as Montgomery Co., Grayson Co., and Carroll Co. John married Eleanor Edwards in 1792 in Grayson Co., Virginia. They had 6 known children all growing to adulthood.
There is a John Dalton (head of family) that appears in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census' in Grayson Co. and the counts match the family numbers. I believe this is our family.
In 1811 John and his brothers divided up their father, William's land. John took part of the Cole farm and part of the Bennett place. This information is from "The Settlements" by John Perry Alderman on page 103.
I have not verified this but in: THE 1812 GRAYSON COUNTY, VIRGINIA COURT ORDER BOOK it is said to say that John Dalton was fined for swearing 3 profane oaths.
John is buried in the North End Cemetery and his gravestone says his date of death is 24 March 1851 but he is listed in the 1850 Mortality Schedule as dying in March 1850. In the 1850 Census Eleanor is found living with their youngest son, Isaac, further supporting John's year of death as 1850. Using the 1850 date he was 77 when he died.
