Forrest Emerson Reed, 95, of 12051 Hampton Ct., Carmel, IN, died Monday, April 21, 1997 at American Village Retirement Community of Indianapolis. He was born Feb. 27, 1902 at Pleasant Hill, OH to Alonzo C. and Anna (Landefeld) Reed. He married Catherine Reed who died in May, 1952. He then married Jeanne Stephenson August 15, 1953 who survives.
He received his undergraduate education at Miami University and Ashland College, from which he received his baccalaureate degree in 1923. He earned a master's degree at the Univer-sity of Michigan in 1926. Professor Reed also studied at the University of Chicago, Alliance Francaise in Paris, the Universi-dad Nacional de Mexico, the Institut de Touraine de I'Universite de Poitiers, and Purdue Uni-versity. His fields of specialization are French and Spanish.
Beginning his teaching career in an Ohio junior high school, Professor Reed taught two years at Ashland College, three sum-mers at Juanita College, one summer at LaVerne College, and spent three years as a Library Assistant at the University of Michigan. He has been a member of the faculty of Manchester College since 1927 and has served as Professor of French and Spanish and Head of the Department of Modern Lan-guage, retiring in May, 1967.
Professor Reed's professional memberships include the National Federation of Modern Language teachers, the American Association of Teachers of French, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Modern Language Association. For 12 years he served as secretary of the Indiana Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French. He has traveled in Mexico and has made two extended trips to Europe. He is also a member of the First Brethren Church of Goshen.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a step daughter, Di-ane Cripe of Carmel, IN and a step son, John L. Oswald of Jupiter, FL; and nine step grandchildren. A son and a step son preceded him in death.
Private graveside service will be held Saturday, April 26, 1997 at Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester, IN. Bender Chapel Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service is in charge of arrange-ments.
Preferred memorials are to the First Brethren Church of Goshen or the Manchester College Library Fund.
