John Stoffel, oldest son of Peter and Harriet Stoffel of Campbell Hill, Illinois, was born near Campbell Hill, September 6, 1857, died at his home in Ava, Illinois, July 22, 1921, aged 63 years, 10 months and 16 days.

He grew to manhood and attended the public schools of his native town, and at the age of about 23 years was united in marriage with Miss Hattie Webb of Campbell Hill, who preceded him to the grave some four years. There were born to them five children, a boy who died in his infancy, and four girls, as follows: Mrs. Anna Crecker and Mrs. Emma Brownfield, both of Willisville, Illinois; Mrs. Myrtle Cluster of Murphysboro, Illinois; and Mrs. Edith Carter of Ava.

On April 3, 1919, he was again married, this time to Miss Ollie Cope of Ava, and continued to live happily together in their home in Ava to the date of his death. Besides his wife and daughters, above named, he leaves behind his aged mother, Mrs. Harriet Stoffel (now about 82 years of age), of Campbell Hill; two brothers, George and William Stoffel of the same place; three sisters, Mrs. Josie Gordon of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Ella Parkhill and Mrs. Ida Knapp, both of Benton, Illinois; also thirteen grandchildren, besides many other relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral service was conducted at Ava by Rev. R. A. Gordon, assisted by Rev. S. A. Teague, and the remains conveyed to the old Looney Springs Cemetery near Campbell Hill and laid to rest beside his first wife. There was a very large funeral cortege, and many of the Campbell Hill friends were at the cemetery awaiting arrival.
