He was born in Lebanon, Ky., on Jan. 15, 1924, to Mary Durett Abell and Samuel Abell.
He was a member of the Baptist church.
He served as assistant chief and arson investigator and retired from the New Albany-Floyd County Fire Department.
He was a national member of the NAACP, a member of St. Johns Masonic Lodge No. 8, was a 32 Degree Mason of Consistory No. 25, a member of the Order Noble Mystic Shrine, Tyre No. 129 and a member of the Honoroable Order of the Kentucky Colonels.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
He spent several years travelling the west coast before returning home to New Albany.
Survivors include his children, Edgar Birdsong, Sherrita Mogg, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Rodney Mott, of Las Vegas, Nev.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, John Sanders, Richard Abell, James Abell, Lula Abell and Dora Abell Parrish.
Visitation at the church will be from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services on Tuesday.
Mason Brothers Memorial Chapel of Evansville is in charge of arrangements.
