Allen was the second of six children born to Dorothy Mae (Casperson) and Palmer R. Acheson, Sr. When he was 10 years old he contacted acute bacterial endocarditis and then became septic and died. He was survived by his parents and five siblings: Shirley A., Doris C., Gladys L., Marilyn and Palmer, Jr.
