MARY ARMSTRONG, FORMER DEAN AT UT-MARTIN, DIES

Mary Rachael Armstrong, former dean of the University of Tennessee-Martin home economics department, died Wednesday after a lengthy illness. She was 87.
Miss Armstrong was born in Knoxville and graduated from UT in 1929 with a degree in home economics. She was an associate professor in home economics at Maryville College, then worked as a nutritionist for Proctor & Gamble Defense Corp.
In 1952, she was named dean of the UT-Martin home economics department after serving three years on the UT-Knoxville home economics staff.
In 1955, Miss Armstrong took a leave of absence and went to Madras, India, for two years as part of a UT-India Contract Team, where she established an internship program at Christian Medical College at Vellore, India.
In 1969, Miss Armstrong was promoted to dean of the School of Home Economics at UT-Martin. She retired from UT-Martin in 1973.
Miss Armstrong is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Eleanor Shaver and Miss Margaret Ellen Armstrong of Chattanooga; a niece, Mrs. Sandra Stanford, and nephew, Stephen Shaver, both of Knoxville.
Visitation in Martin will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home.
On Friday in Knoxville, visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at McCarty Mortuary, 4004 Holston Drive.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at McCarty Mortuary. Burial will follow at Macedonia Cemetery on Holston Drive.
Memorials may be sent ot the Mary R. Armstrong Scholarship Fund, Office of Development, University of Tennessee-Martin, Martin, Tenn., 38238-5028, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
