MYRTLE BEACH Dr. Hugh C. Godefroy, 82, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at home.

He was born Oct. 28, 1919, in Java, former Dutch East Indies, a son of the late Constant and Maude McLachlin Godefroy.

He moved from Grand Mere, Quebec, to Conway in 1961 and established a practice in anesthesiology and family medicine. He returned to Quebec in 1973 to establish a multi-specialty clinic in Hudson. In 1978, he moved back to South Carolina and continued a practice in family medicine in Surfside Beach until his retirement in 1994.

He attended the University of Toronto and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University in Montreal. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and became one of the most highly decorated Canadian aces in World War II. His combat missions, flying Hurricanes and the legendary Spitfire, earned him the British Distinguished Service Order, Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar, and Frances Croix de Guerre with Gold Star. In 1943, he was made Wing Commander Flying and assumed command of the legendary RAF ace, Johnnie Johnsons 127 Wing. He chronicled his experiences during the war in a book, Lucky Thirteen, published in 1983.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Myrtle Beach and a life member and former president of the Canadian Fighter Pilots Association, Caterpillar Club, the Flight 77 Order of Daedalians, Palaver Club, Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, Canadian, American, and South Carolina Medical Association.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Hope Tallevast Godefroy; three sons, David Godefroy and his wife, Ginger, of Jasper, Texas, Allan Stalvey and his wife, Karen, of Columbia and Scott Godefroy of Augusta, Ga.; two daughters, Isabel Hodge and her husband, Ian, of Mississauga, Ontario, and Sarah Hope Smith of Murrells Inlet and her husband, Jackson; thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Constance Helm Godefroy.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the home at 11 San Marks, Antigua, Myrtle Beach.

The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Dr. Michael Cole will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
