DYERSVILLE, Iowa -- Francis H. "Frannie" Vorwald, 85, of Dyersville, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on June 3, 1924, in North Buena Vista, son of Gregor and Theresa (Maiers) Vorwald. He was raised near New Vienna.

He married Dorothy Dunkel on Nov. 5, 1947, in Dyersville. Together they farmed between Dyersville and Worthington, until moving to town in 1991.

Francis was a gentle man who loved his wife and children, and he thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren. Farming was his passion, and he spent some free time hunting, playing cards, having coffee with friends and collecting antique Allis Chalmers tractors.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; four children, Ron (Mary) Vorwald, of Worthington, Jean (Don) Krapfl, of New Vienna, Julie (Roger) Boge, of Earlville, and Mark (Linda) Vorwald, of Worthington; 10 grandchildren, Tim (Melanie) Krapfl, Kathy (Dean) Welter, Traci (Steve) Burlage, Becky (Jim) Mudd, Kristy (Kevin) Russ, Charles Vorwald, Jennifer Vorwald, Samantha Vorwald, Matthew Vorwald and Valerie Vorwald; 12 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Robert (Germaine) Vorwald, of Edgewood, Jerry (Marilyn) Vorwald and Shirley Vorwald, both of Colesburg, and Ramona (David) Engelken, of New Vienna; brother and-sisters-in-law, Rosie Vorwald, of Strawberry Point, Nick (Joan) Dunkel, of Manchester, Lorraine Dunkel, Marie Dunkel and Diane Dunkel, all of Dyersville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Anna Mae Vorwald, Kathryn (Louis) Mescher and Mary (Ray) Berg; a brother, Vince Vorwald; and several brothers-and-sisters-in-law.
