Michael Robert McKinley was born 8 May 1839 in St. Paris, Champaign County, Ohio. and died in a wagon on his way to see a doctor in Tribune, Kansas on 4 Aug. 1908. The wagon was driven by a young man named Marrs.

He was married in Urbana , Ohio on Nov 3, 1861 to a Mercy Ann Brown. They had 9 children.

He was a member of company G, 2 ND Ohio volunteer Calvary and was wounded twice and taken prisoner by John Hunt Morgan at the battle of Lexington, KY on 17 Oct. 1862 and was paroled the next day. Was mustered out of service on Nov 20, 1862 because of wounds at Columbus, Ohio.

He was a engineer on a railroad before the war and had a very unsuccessful working life afterwards because of his war wounds . He mostly tried farming but was a failure at that because of his wounds and was in Leoti,KS. trying to find work when he died of a heart attack. He was buried by the local chapter of the " American Legion." The family didn't have the money to transport his body back to family members in Bates County Missouri. He died with a total of 34 cents to his name.
