The obituary below states that Joseph was born on 9-28-1927 and such a birth did occur in Daviess County on that date to a Lillian Ballard. Born on 6-25-1925 was Joseph C, Mattingly to Mary Ballard in Nelson County. This family is on the 1930 census with a five year old Joseph and the daughter Helen, mentioned in the obituary. I think the date of birth in the obituary is a mistake and pertains to another Joseph Mattingly who was the son of William Anthony Mattingly and Margaret Lillian Ballard.

MATTINGLY - Joseph C. Sr., 80, of Louisville, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008. A loving husband and father, he was born September 28, 1927 (s/b June 25, 1927). He retired after 53 years of service from Brown and Williamson. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Martha Curry Mattingly and a daughter, Barbara Noe. Survivors include daughters, Linda S. Arnett (David), Cox's Creek, KY, Shirley A. Adair (Ronald), New Hope, KY, Marcia E. Pfeister (Clift), Fairdale, KY, and Betty J. Ramser (Herbert), Breckinridge, KY; sons, Joseph Mattingly Jr. (Anita), Litchfield, ME, Michael A. Mattingly (Wanda), Louisville, and Thomas K. Mattingly, Louisville; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Painter. His funeral service will be at noon Friday at Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Hwy., followed by burial at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
