J.A.Hatfield Rites Friday
He Had Been An Arkansas City Resident since 1912
James Abel Hatfield, of 1313 South M St., retired self-employed painter and former employee of the old Shell Refinerly here and the Santa Fe Railroad, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
He was born Dec. 20, 1872, in Pekin, Ill., to Moses A. Hatfield and Sarah E. Estes Hatfield. The family came to Kansas in 1875 in a covered wagon and settled near Bluff City.
He spent his early life in Caldwell, and was employed there by the Rock Island Railroad. He came to Arkansas City in 1912 to work for the Santa Fe and left the railroad in 1922 to work for Shell. In later years he was self-employed as a paint contractor.
In earlier years he had belonged to the Eagle and Mosse lodges here and was a member of several bowling leagues.
He was married Feb. 1, 1898, at Wellington, to Bertha Ellen Holdredge, who died in 1956. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Lorene Miller, who died in 1932, and three brothers.
Survivors are three daughters, and six sons, Mrs. H.A. (Peggy) McCoy of Littlefield, Tex., Mrs. Robert L. (Leona) Chambers of oklahoma City, Mrs. Russell (Dorothy) Kenney, 1322 N. Second St., Glen C. Hatfield, of Albuquerque, Louis S. Hatfield of 1313 South M. St., Gilbert J. Hatfield, of Wichita, Ernest E. Hatfield of W. Kansas Ave., Richard A. Hatfield, 1125 N. Second St., and two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Josie Logue of Wichita and Mrs. Lilly Neighbors of Eureka and Clyde Hatfield of Caldwell, 22 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Jess Rindt and Son Memorial chapel with Dr. Frederick Maier officiating. Friends may call from 6 p.m. Wednesday until service time Friday at the funeral home. The casket will not be opened after the service. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery.
