Caswell Breon, son of John and Dianna Craft Breon, was born December 2, 1857 near Hedrick, Iowa, in Competine Township, where he spent his entire life. He passed away January 19, 1931, at the age of 73 years, 1 month and 17 days, at his home in Farson.

When Mr. Breon was six years of age, his father was called to the service of his country and died while in that service.

At the age of fourteen he was placed on his own responsibility and endured many hardships of those days, but by hard work and careful management he was able to overcome all obstacles. He first worked by the month, but, being ambitious to engage in business on his own account, he later rented a farm, which he conducted for eight years. During that period he carefully saved his earnings, practicing economy as well as industry, and in 1890 he purchased a farm, an excellent tract of two hundred and fifty-five acres on sections 7 and 18, in Competine township. He carried on general agricultural pursuits, and his place was well improved, its neat and thrifty appearance indicating his careful supervision and practical methods.

In politics, Mr. Breon was a democrat. He never held public office, however, other than as a member of the schoolboard of his district. His success can be attributed only to his own efforts and constant faith in the country in which he lived.

On January 3, 1877, he was married to Martha Ellen Parker, who preceded him in death on April 11, 1926. To this union was born four children: Jesse Albert of Hedrick, John Marion of Ottumwa, Ada Bell Robinson of Hedrick, and Mary Etta Kopsieker of Ollie, who with grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, one brother Eli Breon and one sister, Mattie Mefford Bowlin, survive him.

On February 23, 1927, Caswell was united in marriage to Ora Crawford Biggs, who also survives him.

On many occasions he was heard to express what a great heritage his forefather had left him by locating in this particular place. In the later years of his life he was privileged to see many parts of this country, but was never able to be convinced but what this was the best of all.

During his entire life it was his highest ambition to provide and care for his immediate family.

Caswell, who was a patient at the St. Joseph hospital here until last Saturday, was believed to be well on his way to recovery when death came. Three weeks ago, he underwent an operation for the removal of a stone in the bladder.

He will be greatly missed by his family and a host of friends in the community.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday, January 21, conducted by the Rev. Orr Campbell of Des Moines. Interment was made in the Martinsburg Cemetery.

Gravesite Details

There isn't a metal cap on top of his cement grave like there is for Martha, and it doesn't look like there ever was one.
