Aviation Cadet Leon W. Cavender, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Cavender, 710 East Page, has just finished his basic at Goodfellow Field, San Angelo, Texas, and is now taking his advanced training as a pilot at Ellington Field, Texas. A graduate of SHS, Cadet Cavender attended STC and completed his civilian pilot training at the Municipal airport here. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in June, 1943, and received orders to report to Kelley Field, Texas, on September 10 of that year. Lt. Leon W. Cavender, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Cavender, 710 East Page, is completing his combat training with the Army Air Force heavy bombardment units at Geiger Field, Wash., and will be available soon as an expert pilot of a Flying Fortress. Lt. Cavender entered the service in June, 1943, and prior to that was a student. He had attended many Army technical schools and is considered to be an expert in his line. Lt. Leon Cavender Reported Missing In European Area

The war department today reported that Second Lt. Leon W. Cavender, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Cavender, 710 East Page, is missing in action in the European area. The young lieutenant enlisted in the Army Air Corps in June 1942, and received orders to report to Kelly Field, Texas on September 10. He received his basic at Goodfellow Field, Texas and advanced at Ellington Field, Texas. He is a graduate of SHS and attended STC here and completed his civilian pilot's training at the Municipal airport here before going into uniform. The body of Lt. Leon W. Cavender, pilot who was killed in action in Germany, February 24, 1944, will arrive here at 4:35 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Herman Lohmeyer chapel with the Rev. Fred Eastham of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in National cemetery, with military rites to be conducted at the grave by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
