Enlisted on August 19, 1862, and mustered at Burlington, Iowa, on October 15, 1862, into Company H, 34th Regiment, Iowa Infantry (Union). Enlistment Rank: Private.

The Regiment moved to Helena, Ark., November 22-December 5, 1862. Attached to 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, District of Eastern Arkansas, Dept. of Tennessee, to December 1862.

Battles, Skirmishes, and Engagements: Sherman's Yazoo Expedition (December 22, 1862, to January 2, 1863). Chickasaw Bayou (December 26-28, 1862). Chickasaw Bluffs (December 29, 1862). Expedition to Arkansas Post, Ark., (January 3-10, 1863). Assault on and capture of Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, (January 10-11). Moved to Chicago, Ill., with prisoners (January 17-February 5). At St. Louis, Missouri, till April.

Discharged for disability on March 13, 1863, at St. Louis, Missouri.

Filed for Invalid Pension on December 10, 1888 (Application No. 681,204 and Certificate No. 715,353). His wife filed for a widow's pension on Sept 13, 1924.
