Mike D. Cuhran, 89, of New Castle passed away Feb. 4, 2010, in the Butler VA Medical Center hospice unit following an extended illness. Born Sept. 25, 1920, in Dunbar, Pa., he was a son of Sophia and Stephen Cuhran. He grew up in West Pittsburg.

He was Catholic and attended the former St. Michael Church for many years. He worked at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Carlsbad, N.M., in 1939. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Northern Africa and was part of the air offensive in Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with three bronze stars, five overseas service bars and one service stripe. After attending the Terrace School for Craftsmen in New Castle for carpentry, he worked at Rockwell International's axle division as a millwright from 1949 until he retired in 1982. He enjoyed puzzles, bowling, golfing, fishing, gardening and working outside. He loved working with his hands and was a true craftsman who built his own home.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine; his parents; his brothers, Steve, Joe and Andy Cuhran; and his sisters, Mary Cuhran, Anne Kapraly, Catherine Edmiston and Veronica Borkesz. He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Marge Goscewski and Helen Herman; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy Mylo and her husband, Nick, of New Castle; a son and daughter-in-law, David Cuhran and his wife, Carol, of Chandler, Ariz.; grandchildren, Robert and Lauren Mylo, and Mike, Andrew and Chris Cuhran; four great-grandchildren; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Mike will be greatly missed by his family and everyone who knew him.

A private blessing service for family and friends will be conducted Friday at the Noga Funeral Home, 1142 S. Mill St. The Rev. Thomas Lewandowski, pastor of St. Camillus Church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
