OAKLAND TRIBUNE
Funeral Set for Fred L. Dowell, 100
A century of California history, that spanned gold mines, the early automobile business, modern motor trucks and an active interest in the space age, will be closed tomorrow with the funeral of Fred Leroy Dowell.
Mr. Dowell died at the age of 100 on Monday in a local hospital following a fall the week before.
A native of Butte County's little community of Forbestown, where he was born Feb 16, 1870, he owned and operated several gold mines nearby during his teens.
While not yet 21, he came to Oakland and became a South Pacific Railroad ticket agent at the 13th Avenue station.
For the remainder of his life he made Oakland his home, building a family residence at 2136 Funston Place and residing there from its completion in 1926 until recently when he and his fourth wife moved to a retirement home.
Mr. Dowell survived three wives.
A lifelong Eastbay businessman, he operated his own cigar stand, a livery stable, a limousine business, a big auto sales and service firm in Martinez, and his own Atlas Freight Co. trucking line
He spent many vacations at a summer home on the McKenzie River in Oregon.
As a young man he was secretary of the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Oakland.
On his 100th birthday, he said he very much appreciated the span of history he was privileged to experience in his lifetime. His only regret, he said, was that he couldn't personally take part in the space age.
Surviving are his widow, Lura H.; twin sons, Raymond A.of Alameda and Roland M. of Fresno; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Service will be conducted for Mr. Dowell at 1 p.m. at the George W. Murphy Mortuary, 1421 High St., Alameda.
