Bertha Mae Keown was born near Pleasanton, IA to John R.and Mary Elizabeth Keown. Her paternal great grandparents were George Morey and Silvia Butterfield Morey, some of the early settlers in Decatur CO, IA. Bertha was a life-long members of the RLDS Church and was baptized as a member in 1906. Bertha was the mother of five children: Virginia, Alden, John, Dorcas and Opal. At her death, she was survived by two sisters, one brother, 20 grandchildren an 10 great-grandchildren. Her obituary described Bertha as a 'person of extraordinary patience and kindness, deeply devoted to God and her church. Hers was a home of peace, maintained in efficient, quiet authority.'
