John was the son of Thomas Redmond and Sarah Mahala Grider James. About 1848 he married Jane Aveline Brown in Buncombe County. By 1870 they had moved to the Fines Creek area. He died at the age of 73. He and Jane were the parents of Mary Louisa, Thomas G., David Harrison, Sarah E., Silas L., Emeline "Annie", Nancy A., and William P. James.
