JOBS STARKS COLLARD was born in Missouri, on the 21st day of March, 1813, and the Capital City of Madisonville in Madison County, Texas owes it's beginnings in a large part to this generous benefactor. It all began in August, 1833, when he first came to Texas.

He served in the Texas Army from March 1 to June 12, 1836, and was first lieutenant in Captain William Ware's Company at the Battle of San Jacinto. After receiving his discharge he re-enlisted in the army and commanded a company until at least September 30, 1836.

Captain Collard received a league and labor of land from the Montgomery County Board, on January 18, 1838, and then in May of the same year The Republic of Texas issued him 640 acres of land in a Donation Certificate as payment for the duties performed at San Jacinto.

J S Collard's first wife was Miss Elizabeth Robinson, and they had five children, Joseph, who married Jennie Martin; Elizabeth, who married Phillip Crabb; Mollie, who married Reuben Stillwell; Nannie, who married Iezick Burdet; Emma, who married Billie N. Bryan. Mrs. Elizabeth Robinson Collard died in Madisonville, Texas, in 1854 at the age of 38. Prior to her death however, there was talk of a new County being developed and the Collards donated 200 acres of land for the new County Seat. So in the summer of 1853 they began to sell lots in the new city of Madisonville, Texas.
.
Collard was next married to Sarah James, daughter of Brown James. Their children were: Maggie, who married W. A. Childress; Eveline, who died in infancy; and Annie Collard, who died in infancy; and finally Job Brown Collard.

Captain Collard lived for a number of years in Danville, Texas, and after his death on, June 1, 1867 he was buried in a marked grave in the old cemetery at Madisonville, Madison County, Texas, USA.
