Josephus was the second of 8 children born to Newel Brock and Martha (Mills) Brock.

Biographical Memoirs of Greene County,Indiana with Reminisences of Pioneer Days, B. F. Bowen and Co., Indianapolis, IN, 1908 States that Josephus fought in the Civil War and was a part of Company G, 97th Indiana Voluteer Infantry.

It also states that he was discharged on 14 Feb 1864 because he died. It is reported some places that he was captured and became a prisoner at Scottsboro, Jackson County, Alabama where he died (then & there or later in Alabama?).

***** Burial Note *****

Records suggest that all Union prisoners in Alabama were taken to the state's only Civil War prison called the Cahaba Federal Prison. If Josephus was simply captured in Scottsboro and didn't die there it is likely he was sent to the Cahaba prison.

If Josephus then died while being a Cahaba captive he would have initially been buried there and then later along with the other Union soldiers had his body exumed and reburied in the Marietta cemetery in Georgia.

Federal captives during the Civil War were kept in the Cahaba Federal Prison. It was located in an area near Cahaba (once known as Cahawba), Alabama on the banks of the Alabama and Cahaba Rivers. Once designated as a cotton warehouse, it held over 5000 Union soldiers between June 1863 and 1865.

Castle Morgan (as Cahaba Federal Prison was called locally was presumably named after the Confederate cavalry general John Hunt Morgan.

Civil War records say that all prisoners buried in Cahaba have been removed to Marietta National Cemetery in Cobb Co., Georgia. However, many of Marietta burials have no associated records and were simply identified as "Unknown".
