CHARTER OAK, Iowa -- Lois A. Bohnker, 87, of Charter Oak died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

Lois A Bohnker was born March 3, 1922, the daughter of Ambrose and Daisy Sparrow Johnston. She died Thursday, February 4, 2010, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of eighty-seven.
She was born in Zearing, Iowa. She graduated from Lincoln Township Consolidated School in Zearing with the class of 1939 and from Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. She then taught business classes and typing for one year at the Ute Public School and for three years at the Charter Oak Public School.

On May 22, 1949, Lois was united in marriage to Eugene Bohnker at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Zearing. The couple made their home in Charter Oak and were blessed with the birth of four children. In 1964, once the children were in school, Lois was employed by the Charter Oak-Ute Community School as Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools and held that position until she retired on August 27, 1987.

She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed a variety of activities including flower and vegetable gardening, cooking and canning, and baking breads and Swedish tea rings. She was a kind and friendly person and especially enjoyed socializing over coffee and tea rings. She had an extensive bell collection. For 30 years she was a volunteer for the Crawford County American Cancer Society. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, having served on various church boards and committees, and was also a member of the Ladies Aid.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene; and one son, Craig. Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn; two sons: Keith and his wife, Anna; and Kent; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters: Nell; Hilda (Jan) and her husband, Jesse; and Carol; two sisters-in-law: Mary Lou; and Shirley and her husband, John; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Pastor Kathy Spracklin officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Charter Oak Cemetery in Charter Oak.
