John Samuel was the eldest son of Silas Newton and Nancy Tarbutton Bozeman. The family lived near what became the border of Cherokee and Pickens Counties in Georgia. Following the Civil War Silas Newton Bozeman was killed by a man named Arwood with a pitchfork when Silas attempted to retrieve his plow. Arwood was convicted of the crime and served time. John Samuel moved the family to Concord, TN where he worked hauling marble from the Concord quarry to the railroad that carried the marble to Washington DC. John Samuel then became the head engineer for Brookside Mills in Knoxville and moved the family to "happy holler" between Central and Broadway on Baxter Ave.
