Obituary of Eliza Z. McCombs
Born November 16, 1854, married to S. O. Burks 1870. There were born to this union 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls, 1 girl and 3 boys living, all present at the funeral. Her husband preceded her about 1 and ½ years. She passed away at Kansas City, the 13th of January 1921. She was 66 years, 1 month and 27 days old. Funeral services were conducted by Z. H. Browning at Eugene church after which the body was laid to rest in the Eugene Cemetery on Sunday, January 16, 1921.
A telegram was received Thursday night by H. O. Burks that his mother, Mrs. S. O. Burks was dead in Kansas City, Mo. He went on train No. 25. The living children all gathered at the home of her brother, A.E. McComb, where she died. Saturday funeral services were held by Elder Wright at the Rose Chapel, Kansas City, Mo., there was a large crowd of relatives and friends present. Sunday the remains were shipped back to Eugene, all the children accompanying. There was service at the church at Eugene conducted by Elder Browning after which the body was laid to rest by the side of her husband who had preceded her about one year and six months.
The following account of the accident is taken from the Kansas City Post. "Mrs. Eliza Jane Burks, 66 years old, of St. Louis, fell down a flight of stairs yesterday at the home of her brother, A.E. McCombs, 1920 Montgall Avenue, and was killed. Her neck was broken. Mrs. Burks was visiting her brother. She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Enderson in St. Louis. She is survived by four brothers, three sons and the daughter.
