Son of Michael Mackes and Anna Catharine Ruth.

Edward Henry Meckes was christened 31 Dec 1863 at Christ Lutheran Church at Hamilton Square. His date of birth was given as 4 September 1856. However, his death certificate says he was born in 1858 and the 1900 census shows him born in 1857. The sponsors at the baptism were his parents. He first married Amanda Schook (daughter of Emanuel Schook and Susanna Buskirk). In 1898 and 1901 they were living at 144 E. Grace St. in Jermyn, PA. In 1903 they were living at Welsh Hill in Mayfield, PA. Amanda died in 1917 of Bright's disease.

After Amanda died, Edward was remarried to his second wife, Emma (Hunt) Carey (daughter of Albert Hunt and Lizzie Jane Williams) by Alderman, W. H. Thomas (Lackawanna County marriage license #2273). At the time of their marriage in 1919, Edward was living in Mayfield and Emma at Jermyn, PA. He was a miner and Emma a cook.

Edward was a miner for many years. He lived at Jermyn, Mayfield, and Peckville in Lackawanna Co., PA. He lived at Jermyn for 35 years before moving to Peckville around 1928. Edward died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clifford Bressette, at 312 Walnut St., Peckville and was buried in Jermyn Cemetery by undertaker, J. H. Kenbach, 24 Depot St., Peckville, PA.
