Darrel E. Sickels, 69, died Saturday March 24, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at the West Liberty United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established.

Darrel was born May 2, 1937 in Burlington the son of Marian and Myrle Huneke Sickels. He was a graduate of Burlington High School in 1955. He attended Reynolds Institute, a drafting school where he later taught, in San Bernardino, California.

On June 23, 1957 he was united in marriage to the former Nancy E. Smith in Burlington.

Darrel was in the Army reserves, a member of the Masonic Lodge and a proud member of the Eagles Lodge in Iowa City. He also was a member of the United Methodist Church of West Liberty, Iowa.

He worked as a draftsman and design engineer all of his life, most recently operating his own business in West Liberty designing commercial and residential buildings.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy of West Liberty; two daughters, Kimberly Sickels of Burlington, Iowa and Kelli (David) Touch of West Burlington, Iowa; three sons: Kirt (Debra) Sickels of West Liberty, Darrel (Chris) Cornell of Lake Arrowhead, Calif. and Kevin (Kelly) Cornell of Oceanside, Calif.; 14 grandchildren: Mindy (Matthew) McHugh of West Liberty, Allen (Cassandra) Sickels of North Liberty, Christy Sickels and fiancé Damian Bardell, Jenny (Brian) Haley of West Burlington, Heather (Lucas) Woodsmall of Pewaukee, Wisc., Joshua Clark of Burlington, Branden and Stephanie Touch of West Burlington, Darrel Stephen, Kaitlyn and Shannon Cornell all of Lake Arrowhead, Calif., and Kirstie, Krystal and Cameron Cornell all of Oceanside, Calif.; 6 great grandchildren: Miranda and Jayce McHugh, Alexis and Madisyn Haley, Eion Bardell, and Calli Sickels; one sister, Ruth (Frank) Bailey of Rapids City, SD; one brother, Robert (Carole) Sickels of East Moline, Illinois; one sister-in-law, Cornie Sickels of Gladstone, Il.; his mother-in-law, Bernice Smith-Johnson of Davenport; one brother-in-law, Adrian (Marianna) Smith of Rapids City, Il.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, James, and a grandchild, Annie Clark.He had a great love of all his family, and his grandchildren were very special to him!
