The daughter of LeRoy Briggs "Roy" Putman and Veleda Carolyn Petri, Dorothy's first marriage was to William Victor "Bill" Hubele of East Alton, Illinois. She lived in Portland, Oregon at that time and their marriage took place on 06 Mar 1945 in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington. They were soon divorced.

Children from first marriage: None.

Dorothy then married Loren Clifton Wharton around 1946. He was a spray painter in a car factory. They moved to Madison County, Illinois and were the parents of 2 children by the time their marriage ended.

Children from second marriage: 1 son, 1 daughter.

Dorothy later married Ronald Clyde Stauffer. They lived in Edmundson, St. Louis County, Missouri.

She was an assembly worker for the Universal Match Company. She was a member of Teamsters Local 688.

Ronald served in the United States Navy for 4 years after high school. He then became an officer for the St. Louis County Police Department. He remained there until his retirement.

Dorothy battled metastasized malignant melanoma (skin cancer) for about 2 years. She died at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond Heights, Missouri at the age of 44 years, 3 months and 3 days old.

She was survived by her husband, Ronald; 1 son, Russ Wharton; 1 daughter, Diana Wharton; her mother, Veleda Putnam; and many extended family members.

Visitation was held on 27 Mar 1971 at Baumann Chapel on Woodson Road in Overland, Missouri. Funeral services were conducted there at 2 p.m. on the afternoon of 29 Mar 1971.

Dorothy's husband, Ronald, passed away in 2013.
