Kendall Day Garff, 90, automobile dealer, rancher, community leader, politician, philanthropist, and family man, died March 14, 1997 at his home following a brief illness.
Born July 18, 1906 in Draper, Utah to Royal Brigham and Rachel Day Garff.
Married Marjorie Heiner on September 1, 1932 in the Salt Lake Temple. She passed away on September 29, 1976. Married Betty June Morgan on February 26, 1977.
Attended public schools in Draper, Logan, and Salt Lake City. Graduated from the University of Utah, with BA degree in 1932. Served mission for LDS Church in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, 1926-1928. Active member in the LDS Church, holding many positions, including temple worker.
Sold woolen goods in Utah, Montana, and North Dakota as a college student to finance his education. First business was gas station at 5th South and 2nd East in Salt Lake. First new vehicle dealership was Studebaker cars and trucks just prior to World War II and then Oldsmobile in 1946 which has grown today to seventeen franchises throughout Utah.
Founder and Chairman of the Board of Garff Enterprises for many years, former owner in Deseret Livestock Company, principle owner and president of Skull Valley Ranches, director, Detroiter Mobile Homes and for several years the largest mobile home dealer in the world.
Served on board of directors of Service, Inc. and Process Systems, Inc. Also a director of First Security Corporation for twenty-five years, two-term president of Utah Automobile Dealers Association, past-president of Fidelity American Life Insurance Co., member of the University of Utah National Advisory Council, member of the University of Utah Business School Advisory Committee, member of YMCA board of directors, Chairman of Brigham Young University Achievement Council, executive director of the national board of Boy Scouts of America, past-president of the Salt Lake Country Club, and a director of the Alta Club.
University of Utah School of Business Outstanding Achievement Award in 1961, Emeritus Award winner in 1972, Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1979 and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree in 1989.
Member of the University of Utah Business School National Board of Advisors. Was inducted into the Beehive Hall of Fame in 1996. Also received Silver Beaver Award in Scouting, was Honorary Consul for the Federal Republic of West Germany for twelve years and Honorary Colonel in the Utah National Guard.
Active in local, state, and national divisions of the Republican Party, he served as National Chairman for the party in Utah for two decades and as Transportation Director for the national convention in 1972. Ardent outdoorsman, particularly enjoying hunting, fishing and golfing with family, friends, and business associates.
Survived by his wife, Betty Morgan Garff, and three children: K. Gary and his wife, Linda, Seattle, WA; Robert H. and his wife, Katharine, Bountiful; and Jane and her husband, Chris Whitworth, Salt Lake City; thirteen grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. Also step-children: Nicholas G. Morgan, III; Stephen G. Morgan and his wife, Darlyne; Claudia Morgan Scalley and her husband, Ford G.; David T. Morgan all of Salt Lake City; and Richard S. Morgan and his wife, Maria of San Antonio, TX; fifteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Also survived by sister, Margaret Anderson, Salt Lake City. Preceded in death by brother, Royal Garff, and sisters, Grace Bryson and Minnie Richards.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 1997 at 12:00 p.m. in the Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 South Wasatch Drive (2500 East). Friends may call at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, on Monday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday at the Stake Center from 10:00-11:30 a.m.
