Henry was born on 18 October 1817 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio on the bank opposite Westbrooks. He was the fifth of six children. His mother died in 1822 when he was five and his father married Mrs. Frances Rathbun on Sep 30 1824 in Belpre, Washington County, Ohio. His father ran flat boats up and down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans and died at the falls of the Ohio River while on his way from New Orleans to Marietta in 1826 when Henry was nine years old.

Marriage Record revealed Henry E. Barstow and Caroline A. Woodward married on March 14, 1839 in the Baptist Church in Newport, Shelby County, Ohio.

Henry was twenty-one and Caroline was twenty-two when they married.

The 1840 census revealed Henry was employed in agriculture and they were living in Newport, Washington County, Ohio. Household members: Henry Barstow (20-29), Caroline (20-29), Harriett (under 5).

The 1850 census revealed Henry was a farmer and their real estate value was $1000. They were living in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. They were born in Ohio. Household members: Henry E. Basston (37), Caroline A. (33), Harriet A. (10), Cynthia W. (8) and Ackoa (1/12).

The 1860 census revealed Henry was a laborer and their personal property value was $100. They were living in New Port, Washington County, Ohio. Household members: Henry Barstow (43), Caroline (42), Whitney (13), Achsah (10), Clark (5) and Frank (1).

They lived on the bank of the Ohio River above Marietta, Ohio. His occupation was a cooper,(barrel maker). They moved to Williams County, Ohio in 1869.

The 1870 census revealed Henry was a cooper (barrel maker), their real estate value was $800 and their personal property value was $200. They were living in Bryan, Williams County, Ohio. Household members: Henry Barstow (52), Caroline (53), Mila (20), Clark (15) and Frank (11).

The 1880 census revealed they were living in Pulaski, Williams County, Ohio. Henry's parents were born in Rhode Island and Caroline's father was born in Connecticut and her mother was born in England. Henry's two sons were also Coopers. Household members: H. E. Barstow (62), Caroline (62), Millie (26), Clark (24) and Frank (21).

Henry died just nine days before their forty-ninth wedding anniversary in 1888 in Bryan in Williams County, Ohio.

The History of Marietta and Washington County, page 970 incorrectly stated that his death occurred in 1880.

Death Certificate revealed Henry C. Barstow was born in Marietta, Ohio, was married and was a cooper. Henry died at age seventy of Pneumonia on March 5, 1888 in Bryan, Williams County, Ohio.

Fountain Grove Cemetery record revealed Henry E. Barstow was born on October 18, 1817 and died on March 5, 1888. They were buried in Lot #309 in Bryan in Williams County, Ohio along with their daughter, Mildred who had no headstone and DeWitte C. (b.1870 d.1877), a seven year old, probably their grandson or great-grandson.

Henry lived to age 70.
