Edmund was one of nine children born to Joseph and Mary (Ballmann) Alfermann. He was born in Krakow and grew up there.
In August of 1918, Edmund registered for the Army. He was expected to go to training before the end of September. Due to the prevalence of influenza in some of the training camps, his departure was postponed. (Franklin County Tribune 10-04-1918.)

Edmund left with a group of men from Franklin County and headed to Camp Bowie in Texas. When the men arrived, they were examined and found to be in good health. They were to remain in medical observation for fifteen days. At that time there was little influenza in Camp Bowie; which held the record as having the best health conditions of any camp in the country. (Franklin County Tribune - October 25, 1918)
