PETERSBURG, Iowa -- Paul G. Scherbring, 86, of Petersburg, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at Ennoble Manor, Dubuque, after a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Petersburg, with the Rev. John O'Connor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m. and military rites will be accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7736 at 7 p.m.

He was born on May 30, 1923, in Dyersville, son of Aloysius and Clara Kruse Scherbring. He married VernaMae Hingtgen on April 29, 1988, at St Patrick Catholic Church, Colesburg.

Paul was a veteran of the Army.

He was a member of VFW Post 7736 and a past member of Lone Pines Country Club. He also was a member of UAW Local 94.

Paul loved to golf, fish and woodwork. He and VernaMae traveled to many communities to play cards.

Surviving are his wife, VernaMae; two stepsons, Rich (Laura) Watson, of Dubuque, and Frank (Jeanie) Marshall, of Zwingle; three stepdaughters, Pam Schmitt, of Dubuque, Patricia Scales, of Highland, Wis., and Diane Colson, of Linden, Wis.; numerous stepgrand and great-grandchildren; a brother, James (Janice) Scherbring, of Colesburg; a sister, Myra Rausch, of Dyersville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Urban and Fritz Scherbring; a sister, Eunice Scherbring; a sister in-law, Florence Scherbring; and a brother in-law, Joseph Rausch.
