Calvin C. Miller, Musician, Co. B Calvin C. Miller, a 24 year-old farmer, enlisted as a private in the "Watauga Marksmen" in September 1861 at Boone, NC.
He was promoted to musician (fifer) on 1 March 1862. Miller was captured at Hanover Court House, VA on 27 May 1862 and exchanged on 5 August. He was captured again at Chancellorsville on 3 May 1863 and exchanged on 13 May 1863. Miller was reduced to ranks as a private after 31 December 1864 probably because his company was so thinned, it could not afford the luxury of a musician. Miller deserted to the enemy on 26 February 1865, and was released after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
Promotions: Musician on 1 March 1862 (*note: Musicians ranked higher than privates, a distinction reflected in their monthly pay: fifers and drummers received twelve dollars, one dollar more than their comrades.)
