John Finney, age 10, first appears in the 1850 census in Bath Township, Franklin County, Indiana with his parents and brother, William. Census records indicate he was born in Indiana or Ohio. On 27 Sep 1853 he married Louisa Jane or Eliza Jane Slaven (transcription conflicts from census and marriage records make her first name uncertain) in Jasper County, Illinois. They had at least five children: Isabel, b. c1855, Alice Jane, b. 1859. John W., b. 1861, Elizabeth Rachel, b. 1870, and Daniel, b. c1871, all in Illinois.

John last appears in the 1880 census in Granville Township, Jasper County, Illinois. His grave marker application does not include a death date but does say that the contract for the marker was granted on 28 Sep 1886, making 1886 the likely death year. The same grave marker application indicates his burial location as Hazel Dell, Cumberland County, Illinois, where his father was buried, but the stone with matching service details is found in Slusser Cemetery.
