This is very confusing!! His obit said he was born May 2, 1864, and named his parents. But if he was born in 1864, he is not on the 1870 census with them because his parents also had a son named Jimmy born in 1866 who died at age 4 in 1871 and was buried beside them in the Elizabeth City Cemetery!

James C Goard, Elizabeth, Illinois
Funeral Services will be held here Wednesday afternoon for James C. Goard, 64, who died at a Freeport hospital about 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon following an illness of several weeks. The last rites will be held at the home at 1:30 o'clock and at the first Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock, with the pastor, Reverend Richard Kettliz, officiating. Burial will be made in the Elizabeth cemetery.
James Cyril Goard, the son of James H. and Margaret Lindsay Goard, was born in Elizabeth on May 2, 1864 and spent all of his life in the vicinity, excepting about eight years in Iowa and Wisonsin. For the most of his active life he was a barber but later he did decorating and paperhanging.
He was first united in marriage to Miss Eunice Wilcox who preceded him in death as did their son Hershel Goard. A granddaughter Doris Goard survives.
On February 11, 1917, he was united in marriage to Mayme Platz of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. The marriage took place in Elizabeth. To this union were born five children, namely Misses Evelyn and Cora, also Jack, Valrie, and Frederick, all of Elizabeth who survive, as does his widow Mrs. Mayme Goard.
He also leaves two brothers Henry Goard of Dubuque, Iowa and Fred Goard of Elizabeth, and two sisters, Mrs. Helen Casper, of Racetrack, Montana and Mrs. Ada Carley of Chicago. Two sisters and his parents also proceeeded him in death.
Mr. Goard was well known throughout the community. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge in Elizabeth for many years.
